Dasn le cadre du Séminaire d'Epistémologie des Sciences Cognitives: SCIENCES COGNITIVES & EXPLICATION DES PHENOMENES SOCIAUX, conférence du professeur émérite Csabah Pleh, en résidence au Collegium en 2016-2017, sur le thème : "Early French theories of the social mind and the issue of social representations in contemporary cognitive science"

Résumé: In the French social science of the first half of 20th Century several models were proposed that postulated individual and collective representations. The proposals of Blondel and Halbwachs, in particular, called for a collective psychology. I shall present some aspects of these proposals and their two limitations: the lack of a mechanism for the transformation of individual representations into collective ones, and the uncertainties of their flirtation with the idea of a ‘collective mind’. They will then be contrasted with contemporary theories of the distribution of thoughts, especially the epidemiological theory of Sperber, and the specific mechanisms of belief distribution and consolidation they involve, as well as the role they give to the theory of mind and the attribution of mentality to other agents .
